Uncertainty Shocks

First time to watch hockey in Canada. Ice hockey is the national sport in Canada (some local guys told me that lacrosse is the most popular sport.) Canada won the Olympic ice hockey gold medals in 2010 and 2014 for both men and women. Vancouver holds the 2010 Winter Olympic and Sidney Crosby scores the Golden Goal to beat the USA in the overtime. 第一次在加拿大看冰球比賽，冰球和袋棍球(Lacrosse)是加拿大的國球，他們曾經在2010、2014 年贏得男子、女子冰球冠軍，2010 年在溫哥華舉辦時更是受到當地矚目，決賽靠著 Sidney Crosby* 的延長賽黃金進球，擊敗美國贏得金牌使得舉國歡騰。 Although Vancouver Canucks is not the strong team in recent years, the atmosphere is still impressive for me. People focus on the ball game and cheer for their home team. This reminds me the experience at Duke basketball court. Fans are crazy about their favorite team. 雖然溫哥華加人在近年的戰績都不突出，今天的觀眾還是很熱情的為地主隊加油，這點讓我想起以前在杜克看男籃的經驗，大家對於自己支持的球隊都很狂熱。 *Sidney Crosby 像是冰球界的LBJ, 從高中時就名滿天下，曾帶領加拿大兩度奪下奧運金牌，自己的NHL母隊-匹茲堡企鵝也是前兩年的史坦利盃冠軍。影片是2010年在這個場地奪金的致勝球。

Recently we just completed our new professor hiring process. The job market candidates either come from top schools in the US (ex: Stanford*2, Wharton*2, Columbia, NYU) or Europe (ex: HEC, EPFL, Norway). AEA/AFA is coming soon next week. According to FiveThirtyEight survey in 2014 from top 17 PhD programs with 308 economics phd candidates, they find that Macro is the top field that most candidates (64, 20.8%) choose as their primary field. Labor ranks second (30, 9.7%) and micro theory (26, 8.4%) is the third. Then I combine similar fields together and get the following results. JPE, one of the top 5 economics journals, celebrates its 125th anniversary and invites the Chicago economics and finance faculty to write the review for their fields. Of course, they mainly focus on the research based on the Chicago School of Economics and their past research. The scholars on this list look like Hall of Famers or All-Star. 之前在臉書的文章下面，看到有些人留言，認為經濟學沒什麼用，或者經濟學家連金融海嘯都沒預測到，實在很失敗。 但這一點或許大家有些誤會。的確在金融海嘯發生前，大部分的經濟學家都沒有意識到這個危機，但還是有像是 Raghuram Rajan 等學者在先前提出示警，所以並非所有人都未注意到此事情。 而就像傳染病跟癌症，有許多疾病醫學界還無法完全解決或預防，但我們不會認為醫學和醫生等專家無用，相反的，當嚴重事情發生時，我們更應該投入資源研究相關議題，來預防和解決下一次可能發生的危機。所以近年來經濟學界對於金融危機的議題，有很多檢討和探究，希望未來類似事件我們能有辦法及時應對。以前小編的老師有說過，當一門學問都沒大問題要解決時，那才是該學問的嚴重問題，所以站在經濟學徒的立場，金融海嘯給了我們很好的啟示，讓大家有個目標來做研究。 此外，經濟學家並非如您所想的，只作有關總體跟金融市場的研究，有更多學者從事不一樣的經濟研究。現在的經濟學研究發展十分廣泛，有的研究者從總體角度出發，專注在貨幣、就業、貿易及金融體系波動的議題，探討經濟體如何永續成長; 從公司角度出發，研究產業競爭、公司如何取得資金、如何提昇生產力和創新; 從個人角度出發，探究當人們扮演家戶、勞工或是企業主時，其消費、儲蓄、投資等行為，做選擇時的動機和誘因為何。另外經濟研究也能結合政治制度、法律、教育、醫療、環境等議題，量化其得失並探討對於經濟體和大眾有何影響。建議讀者可以閱讀像是 <蘋果橘子經濟學>系列 (Freakeconomics)、 <創造金錢買不到的機會> (Who Gets What and Why)、 <一切都是誘因的問題> (The Why Axis)、 <窮人的經濟學> (Poor Economics)、 <國家為什麼會破產> (Why Nations Fail)  等好書，來了解經濟學家探討的議題十分多元有趣。 而有的經濟學家也將自己比喻成為工程師，期待我們能設計制度來處理社會上的難題，像是 2007 年的諾獎得主 Roger Myerson，在 80 年代解決加州的電力產業呈現獨佔且資源分配不公的現象。 2012 年的諾獎得主 Alvin Roth，在 90 年代設計美國住院醫生...

We often see people wear their jerseys and hats on the street. Of course, Roy Halladay is their best pitcher in recent years, so there are many fans here in Vancouver as well.
